How Sportlight measures athlete movement

LiDAR measures each player’s movement directly, rather than inferring it from satellite signals or reconstructing it from video. AI then identifies who is who.

Why Sportlight LiDAR

Any environment

Indoors and outdoors, including extreme heat.

Measured directly

The distance to each player, measured by laser from fixed sensors.

Every direction

Direct measurement of each player’s path, curves included.

Illustration · not to scale. Repeated across the whole capture area, the distances form a 3D picture.

What is LiDAR?

LiDAR sends out laser pulses and times their return, measuring where every player is, directly and many times a second.

From laser pulse to coaching decision

What is measured, what is calculated, and what is modelled.

  1. 01

    Capture

LiDAR and cameras follow every player across the whole pitch.

  2. 02

    Process

AI identifies who is who, and every metric is calculated from the measurement.

  3. 03

    Review

Results reach staff through the portal, match reports and data export.

Built into your stadium and training ground

LiDAR works indoors and outdoors, including in extreme heat.

01

Stadium systems

Fixed LiDAR sensors and cameras, mounted in the stadium structure, cover the whole pitch. Nothing to wear and no routine calibration.

02

Training ground systems

One sensor can cover more than one pitch, depending on the layout.

03

Installed by Sportlight

Staff switch it on, run the session and switch it off.

Every player identified, every dataset checked

LiDAR captures how each player moves. Cameras capture who is moving.

Do football players wear tracking devices?

Many clubs use GPS vests in training and, where competition rules allow, in matches. Sportlight doesn't need them. Fixed sensors measure every player without anything to wear.

How is each player identified?

Cameras feed an AI model that matches each tracked player to an identity, and our data team checks the result before it is released.

How accurate is Sportlight?

In a peer-reviewed study against 64-camera motion capture (two players, football-specific tasks), velocity error was 0.04–0.14 m/s and acceleration error 0.16–0.70 m/s². We publish the scope of every study in our research library.

What hardware and venue setup are required?

Fixed LiDAR sensors and cameras, installed by Sportlight. Each installation is scoped with a site visit to confirm coverage areas, mounting points and connections.

Does it work indoors and in extreme heat?

Yes. LiDAR works indoors and outdoors, including in high temperatures.

What does the analysis portal show?

Match reports, player and team analysis, benchmarking, wellness indicators, rehab and testing modules, depending on your package. See the portal section above.
